I got on at City Hall, not even a quarter of a mile away from the Brooklyn Bridge here in NYC. There weren’t too many people on since it was past rush hour, probably say.. 9 PM or so.
I sat down expecting a nice calm ride till Queens. I knew I’d have to get up to switch trains eventually, but not at least for another half an hour.
I sat there, with my IPhone in my hand, scanning through all the songs I had recently loaded. Couldn’t really find anything I was in the mood for though, but then I saw it…
I had recently bought the Anthony Robbin’s “Awaken the Giant Within” Audio book since I hardly have any time to actually sit and read a book these days. I listened to it 2 or 3 times in the past few days but figured I’d take another listen.
Its important to invest time into mindset & personal development. With the constant bombardment of negative, ugly, and worthless information every single minute of the day, it really starts to take a toll on the mind. A little positive talk is exactly what I needed.
So I sat there, listening to Mr. Robbins talk about the techniques to turn anyone from a zero to a hero. I listened intently as people passed by, coming in and out after every stop.
I thought to myself, pondering, contemplating, right before a strange figure came before me.
“I’m turning 65,” he said as he hunched over flashing his ID card to me and other passengers nearby..
He reached out, with a coffee cup in his hand.
The two women across from me looked down as they were met with that awkward feeling all train goers experience when one comes around panhandling.
“I’ve been off dope for 11 years now” he explained.
It’s almost like we feel selfish and mean not giving up at least a few cents.
But I tried something different..
“So, what you been doing ever since?” I asked
“You ain’t too smart, are you?”, he replied back
I immediately became irritated. He interrupts my learning session, then he calls me stupid?
“Bro, you ask for my money, but I can’t ask you questions?” I shoot back.
“I don’t need yo money, I probably got mo than you right here in my back pocket! ” he explained
“Then why are you on the train, asking people for money?” I questioned him
“This guy ain’t too smart is he?” he asked the passengers near by
“Dude, whatever problems you have can be solved if you just change your attitude,” I said passionately
“I was on dope for 11 years ago,” he mumbled.
At this point, I’m extremely annoyed. What on earth is this guy doing with his life?
He looks able, healthy and is asking for money on the train. He WAS on dope 11 Years ago, so is that an excuse to be panhandling NOW? This conversation was going nowhere.
At that moment, I realized I was about to reach my stop. I get up and get myself in order.
“Good luck in life, buddy,” I concluded as I got off
You see, I don’t like people who want something for nothing. I think everyone can accomplish absolutely ANYTHING in life. If you put your mind to it, you’ve got it. Just be persistent.
This also applies to network marketing. Yea, it sucks calling leads, it sucks doing stupid meetings, and it sure sucks having to get rejected by everyone including your family and friends.
But still, you can’t just quit right there.
Its not like you’re starting from scratch. Your success blueprint is already there. All you need to do is use it, put it into effect, and reap the fruits of your labor. Doesn’t sound too bad right?
Don’t expect anyone to do anything for you. Don’t ask to get something for nothing, take matters into your own hands and do the work required. Its that simple.

P.S. I don’t mind helping the homeless, but this guy was a joke. He was just trying to scam anyone and everyone.

Hassan,
Great post man. It’s crazy what kind of bad attitudes and negatives beliefs that people have. That man was living in the past and it was holding him back from reaching a more enjoyable future. I like how you handled the situation and did not let it affect you. Sometimes you do need to get in someone’s face and wake them up, because they can’t do it themselves.
